Our Story
Founded in the stunning valley of Hout Bay in 1989, Hout Bay Harriers started as a small group of enthusiastic runners eager to bring structure and community to the local running scene. Our first official run took place on October 4, 1989, starting from the beach car park.
Over the years, we’ve grown into one of the Western Cape’s most beloved running clubs, and one of the oldest! Known for our welcoming spirit, talented athletes, and a rich history steeped in traditions. From weekly runs to iconic events like the Chapman’s Peak Half Marathon, we’ve built a community that values fitness, fun, and friendship.
Our Traditions
Hot Dog Run: A pre-Two Oceans Marathon tradition.
Chapman’s Peak Half Marathon: A premier Western Province Athletics-sanctioned event.
Chairman’s Run: A festive end-of-year celebration.
Support of Hout Bay Charities
The annual running of the Chapman's Peak Half Marathon, held on a traffic-free, world-class route, attracts thousands of local and international runners. As hosts of this event, Hout Bay Harriers is proud to donate money from participants to our charity partners: NSRI, James House, and Love in a Bowl. These funds have enabled our charity partners to make a meaningful and positive impact on our local community
Development Runner Program
Hout Bay Harriers has supported and enabled local runners from disadvantaged backgrounds for many years through our Development Runner Program. These aspiring runners, who seek to run for health benefits and to make a positive social and community impact, often lack the necessary running kit, knowledge, and financial resources to participate in social events and local races.
Recognizing this need, Hout Bay Harriers established a formal program that provides individuals with equipment and financial support to participate in our League Races, Cape Town Marathon, Two Oceans Ultra and Half Marathon, and Comrades Marathon. The Development Runner Program relies on funds received from the Chapman's Peak Half Marathon to continue providing this valuable support to our members.
